Lesson 1 Assurance of Salvation
How can a person be sure that he is saved? Is there something
that he must do to be assured of his salvation? Can someone lose their salvation after they have become saved? These are some
of the questions that are frequently asked by a new Christian and even some who have been saved for years. There are a number
of ways that the Bible gives the answers to these very important questions.
There are some Christians today that live by what I call a day
by day salvation. They believe that each time they sin that until they repent of that sin they are under condemnation from
God. A careful study of the Bible will show that this is not what the Bible teaches at all. Think about this for a moment.
If we must depend on our own ability to keep ourselves saved, we are in a world of trouble. For the Bible tells us in Romans
3v9-10, what shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles
alike are all under sin. As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one." So we see here, no one at all is righteous,
we are all under penalty of sin. There is only one way that we can be assured of our salvation and that is through what
Jesus has done on the cross at Calvary. God demands a perfect sacrifice for our sins to be forgiven. That sacrifice that was
given was Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
I believe that those who have a difficult time realizing
assurance of salvation are the very same ones who believe that they were saved by something they had done. I've heard
some Christians say that they found Jesus, that they decided to live a life of Christ. That they were the ones who sought
after Christ. When one thinks this way they are saying it was them, not God that procured their own salvation. But what does
John 6v44 tell us? "No one can come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day."
We are not the ones who seek God. God is the one who started the process, not us! Someone might say, "Yes but it is up to
me after God called me to do this or that to become saved." Did you know that we can not even believe in God without help
from God? Philippians 1v29 tells us, "For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on Him, but also
to suffer for Him," God is the One Who called us, and He is the One Who opened up our minds to be able to believe on
Jesus Christ. Now if He is the One that called us and if He is the One that opened our minds to be able to believe on Jesus,
then why wouldn't He be the One that makes our salvation sure? Philippians 1v6 tells us this, " Being confident of this, that
He Who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." It is not through anything
we have done or will ever do that gives us assurance of salvation. It is only through God and His mercy that we are saved
and have assurance of salvation. We must simply believe that because God does not lie. He keeps His promise.
I once heard a story about a certain church that believes in
salvation through ones works. This woman was part of a church ministry that went out on a daily basis to knock on doors to
witness to people. She did this for many years. One day she confessed that after all the years she was doing this she still
did not know for sure that when she died that she would be saved. She was a faithful church member and got involved in many
other activities but she did not have the assurance of salvation. This is what happens to those who do good works so
that they can be saved. Believers
do not do good works to be saved they do good works because they are saved. Unless we believe that Jesus Christ alone
is our Savior we will never feel assured of our salvation. It is through Christ and Him alone that we can be assured. It is
important for a Christian to know whether he is saved or not. He can not just think he is.
Ephesians 2v8-9, tells us, for it is by grace you have been saved,
through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. It
is by God's grace, His mercy that we can be saved. Romans 5v17 "For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned
through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness
reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ". It was through Adam that sin came upon us. We were put under the Law which
could only offer us death, but it was through the second Adam, Jesus Christ Who came as a perfect Lamb of God. It was through
Christ's willingness to die on the cross at Calvary that those who would believe in Him could be saved forever. Christ's sacrifice
was once and for all. This grace is a free gift to those who would accept His sacrifice as their own. The work that was
done was not our work; it was the work of our Savior Jesus Christ. Since this was a gift to men there is nothing else to do
but to accept that gift. And if it is a gift, one does not need to work for it. It was freely given, and once given can never
be taken away.
(James
2v23). "And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness ," and he was called God's friend". Just as Abraham needed only to believe,
we too only have to believe God. His word tells us that once we are saved we are promised eternal life. John 3v16 tells us
this "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have
eternal life." Salvation is assured forever. In fact the moment we accept Jesus Christ as our /Savior, when we believe in
Him and accept Him as Savior, our salvation from that very day is assured forever.
These things (about having the life)
have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye
may believe on the name of the Son of God" (1 John 5v9-13).
"And we desire that every one of you
do shew the same diligence of the full assurance of hope unto the end" (Hebrews 6v11-12). Here is a reference to that assurance
which is the full conviction that every promise and revelation concerning the future will be surely fulfilled. This, like
all assurance, is simply the result of believing God. God said it and we must believe it because God can not lie. Numbers
23v19, "God is not a man, that
He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?"

Lesson 2
Living the Christian Life
What is the greatest gift that God gives
us? Is the gift given to us to use for our own selfish reasons? So that we might become wealthy and in need of nothing. No,
our God has called us into His kingdom, not for us to continue to live as the world does, but rather to live the life that
our Lord Jesus Christ lived. His life was not centered on self, but to be centered on these three things: To love our God
above all else, to put Him and His glory before all things, and to love our neighbor as ourself.
Romans 15v6 tells us, "So that with
one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." The most important thing a Christian can
do is to glorify God in every thing he does. This really is the sole purpose of the believer. Nothing else is more important.
King David in Psalm 86v12 puts it this way, "I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your
name forever." The Apostle Paul put it this way: 1 Corinthian 10v31, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do,
do it all for the glory of God." Not much left to the imagination here, is there? No matter what we do we are to do it all
for the glory of God. Every bit of our lives is to be used to the glorification of God. We need to ask ourselves this
question, do I from the time I get up until the time I go to bed glorify God? If you are like me your answer is no. Oh, we
get up in the morning and this is our intention, but then we go to work and it is not long before we get caught up into the
cares of this world. We must not allow ourselves to focus away from the Lord. We must have the mind of Christ in us. Philippians
2v5, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."
We as Christian are to become like Christ
by being transformed as a new creation in Christ, and like Him in His righteousness! Romans 12v2 "And be
not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and
acceptable, and perfect, will of God." There are two ways of thinking, 1. We can think on the "get" way of living or
2. We can think on the "give" way of living. The "get" way is the way of this world. The world's way thinks this:
If I do this or if I do that, what do I get out of it. The "get" way has its desires on the things of this world. It believes
that success is getting material things. It believes the more it has the happier it will be. The "get" way does not want to
part with any thing it has. This way of getting is the trap that Satan uses to hold a person prisoner.
It reminds me of a story that I heard
about how men catch monkeys alive. They make a wooden box covered on all sides. Then they cut one hole in each of the four
sides just large enough for the monkey to put his hand into the box. After this they tie a rope to the top of the box,
put a piece of fruit inside the box and then they hang the box in the air from a tree limb. Then they wait in a hidden place
until a monkey comes along and reaches in the box to get the fruit. When the monkey does, the men run out and catch the monkey.
Now you may ask, "Why doesn't the monkey just run away?" He can't. Do you know why? He can't because he will not let go of
the fruit, and his hand will not fit through the hole in the box unless he lets go of the fruit and he will not do that. This
is exactly how the person who has his mind set on the get way of life is trapped by Satan. The material things in
this world become a trap to those who have the mind of "get". God wants us to have a renewing of our minds, to think
of others before ourselves. He wants us to be givers and not getters.
Is becoming a giver an automatic thing?
Is the first thing we do after becoming saved becoming a giver? No, it takes a renewing of our minds and that takes trust
in God. Once we begin to trust in God in all areas of our lives and desire to let God's love control our lives, then we begin
to let go of the old man in us that wants to get rather then give. It takes a conscious effort on our part to let go of the
control of our lives and give the control to God. Once we begin to do that we are then making a conscious effort to glorify
God. It is when our thoughts of becoming a giver as Jesus was turns to an action, allowing God's love flowing through us to
others that we begin to glorify God.
Matthew 7v24 tells us: "Every one who hears these My teachings and acts upon them will be found
to resemble a wise man who builds his house upon rock." All the good intentions are worthless unless they are put into action.
James 1v22 "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." I once heard of a young
man who went to college. He went to learn a certain thing. He, after a number of years, graduated. He then decided he wanted
to go back to college to learn to do something else, and after a number of years he again graduated. Then he decided to go
back again to learn more. Now whether this story is true or not I do not know. This is exactly what a Christian does when
he goes to church, studies his Bible, and takes a multitude of Bible courses but never takes what he learns and puts it to
action. Our sole purpose in this life is to glorify God by what we give to others, what we leave rather than what we take.
God expects us to take His love and share it with others. Yes it is important to pray, and to study God's word, and yes these
also glorify God, but unless we share the love of God with others we fall short in glorifying God. This will not be easy either.
It will take sacrifice on our part to do this. 1 Peter4v1, "For as much then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh,
arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin." God not only expects
us to do this, He commands it! Mark 16v15-16: "He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to
all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."
How we grow in Christ and continually
glorify Him: 1. Humbly
surrender to the will of God. 2. Repent for the forgiveness of sins. 3. Engage in Spiritual warfare. 4. Praise and
worship God. 5. Give more than you receive. 6. Read the Bible. 7. Pray and obey. 8. Take actions of faith. 9.
Serve, Serve, Serve! 10. Seek Christian fellowship

Lesson 3
Growing in Christ
After you become a Christian, what do you do?
The Bible tells us that Christians normally do certain things to help them grow closer to Christ. These are
called spiritual disciplines — habits that help us become more mature. Let's look at five basic tools of spiritual growth.
Habits That Help Us Grow Closer to Christ:
In the Bible, in church history, and in the experience of millions of Christians, certain basic habits help
us grow in faith, help us enjoy Christianity more, and help us become more helpful to others.
1. Prayer
"Teach us to pray." the disciples asked Jesus, and Jesus responded by teaching them a simple prayer (Luke
11v1-4). Prayer does not need to have special words or fancy phrases — all we need to do is to talk to God. In prayer,
we tell Him what we think, what we like, what we fear, and what we want, and we can be sure that God hears us.
Jesus assured His disciples that God hears and answers our prayers (verses 5-13). Ask, and you will receive!
James wrote that sometimes we don't have what we want "because you do not ask God" James 4v2. So, if you want something, ask
God.
As Creator, God has all the power of the universe. As Father, He is filled with love. We can be sure that
He is able and He is willing to answer our prayers.
But He is also wise enough not to grant everything we ask as soon as we ask. As James explained in
the next verse, "When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on
your pleasures." God doesn't give us what isn't good for us. He doesn't want to hurt us, or to make us selfish brats.
There is much more that could be said about how to pray, but the main thing is to keep praying.
The Lord's prayer asks for "our daily bread" — we look each day to God to supply our needs. That means we pray each
day. We look to God each day. It becomes a habit in our Christian lives. It builds a relationship with God.
As the apostle Paul later wrote, "In everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present
your requests to God" Philippians 4v6.
2. Bible study
Another habit that Christians have found helpful is regular Bible study — reading and thinking about
the words that God has inspired. This is a way that God can speak to us.
The words came through human beings, but the message came from God. "Men spoke from God as they were carried
along by the Holy Spirit." 2 Peter 1v21
As a result, these writings "Are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture
is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may
be thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3v15-17
But again, the key is to keep at it. It is a big book, with ideas that touch on a wide range of life. Although
the main message is simple, it is also filled with profound insights. There is a lot to think about, again and again, each
time we read it.
"My thoughts are not your thoughts," said God through the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. "As the heavens are
higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55v8-9
But in the Bible, God reveals His thoughts to us, and He invites us to think them, too. These are things that
He wants us to know — so we do our part to try to understand them. These are the writings that tell us what God is like,
what He has done, what He will do. These are the writings that tell us what Jesus Christ is like, and what He wants us to
be like.
Some have called it "God's instruction manual." Others compare it to a love letter from a Father to His children.
It's worth reading again and again, so make time for it.
3. Fellowship
God doesn't just call people — he calls them together. He's not creating "only children" —
He is creating brothers and sisters. The Bible tells us that people who believe in Jesus Christ are part of a family, a community,
a people who interact with one another.
The early Christians were a tight-knit community, meeting together, eating together, discussing the faith
together. Acts 2v42
The apostle Paul described believers as "the body of Christ." 1 Corinthians 12v27 Not that each person is
the body of Christ, but together we are the body — and "The body is not made up of one part but of many." (verse 14)
Paul then explains that we each have different strengths and abilities, given to us by God to help one another
(verses 4-7). No one has all the ability, so everyone needs to stick together so that we can benefit from one another.
In some ways, we are able to give help; in other areas, we receive help from other believers. We are working
together, learning to care for one another. That is why God has brought us together and given us different abilities.
"Love one another," He tells us. "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love." "Serve one another in love"
(Romans 12v10; 13v8; Galatians 5v13). To do that, it is essential that we know one another and meet one another on a regular
basis. This is a habit that helps us grow spiritually.
"Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another."
Hebrews 10v25
4. Worship
When Christians get together, they not only speak to one another, they also gather to worship God. "Worship"
comes from words meaning "to have worth." When we worship God, we express how much He is worth to us. We praise Him for His
greatness and goodness, we humble ourselves before Him, we thank Him for what He gives, we look to Him for help, and we show
our desire to do what He wants.
Music is an important part of worship, for music helps express our emotions in a way that simple words cannot.
Paul described a first-century worship service in these words: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and
admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."
Colossians 3v16
But worship includes much more than music — it includes our entire lives. Scripture urges us to "Offer
your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship." Romans 12v1 Every
time we pray, we are involved in an act of worship. It shows how much He is worth to us.
Every time we study the Bible, desiring to learn more about God, we are worshiping Him. Every time we obey,
every time we change our behavior in response to what He says, we are worshiping God. Every time we tell someone else about
His love and goodness, we are involved in worship.
Throughout the week, we worship God. So of course we worship when we gather as a congregation of believers!
Part of our "job description" as a Christian is to praise God (Hebrews 13v15; 1 Peter 2v9). We sing songs of praise to declare
how good He is.
God wants us to worship Him — and He does this for our good, not His own. He does not need flattery
or ego stroking. Rather, He wants us to praise and worship Him for our good. This is one of the ways that we are strengthened
in the faith, that we are reassured of His love, that we are realigned with the wonderful destiny He has prepared for us.
5. Ministry
As mentioned above, God has called us together to serve one another. Since God has given us certain abilities
"for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12v7), we are supposed to use them to serve others. That is why He has given them
and what we are supposed to do with them.
And as always, God tells us this for our good. We grow spiritually by doing this. We become more mature,
more like Jesus Christ.
The Bible tells us that every Christian is a priest — one who serves God and people (1 Peter 2v5). Every
Christian offers spiritual sacrifices and worships with praise and prayers.
Similarly, every Christian is a minister, for the word "minister" simply means "servant." Pastors serve in
the way that God enables them, singers serve in the way that God enables them, teachers serve in the way that God enables
them. The point is that everyone serves. Everyone ministers in one way or another, and by doing so, we are all strengthened
in the faith.
"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others.... If anyone speaks, he should do it as
one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things
God may be praised through Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 4v10-11).

lesson 4
Christian beliefs
Below is a list of some things that Christians believe:
1. God created all that is seen and unseen. Christians
believe that God is the creator of all people, the world, the universe, and everything seen and unseen. This is based on various
Bible passages, including the Bible's book of Genesis.
2. Jesus is the Son of God and is One with God. Christians
believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He is one with God, and that He was sent here for our salvation. In John 10v30
(English-NIV), the Apostle John quotes Jesus as saying, "I and the Father are One."
3. Jesus was conceived of the Holy
Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Christians believe that Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit of God and born through
the Virgin Mary. As explained in Matthew 1v18 (English-NIV), "This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother
Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with Child through the Holy Spirit."
4.
Jesus suffered and was crucified. Jesus suffered for our sins and was crucified. As explained in Matthew 27v23-56 (English-NIV),
Jesus was falsely accused of being an anti-government rebel. He was brought to Pontius Pilate to be crucified. He was mocked,
beaten, taunted and crucified.
5. Jesus died and was buried. Jesus died after being crucified. He was buried in
a tomb owned by a man named Joseph of Arimathea, who was a follower of Jesus. In Matthew 27v57-60 (English-NIV), the Bible
says, "As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.
Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in
a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of
the entrance to the tomb and went away."
6. Jesus rose again (the Resurrection). Jesus was resurrected, which means
that He died, but was brought back to life again. You can read more about the resurrection in the New Testament book of John,
chapter 20. People who believe in Jesus will also be resurrected after they die, and brought into the kingdom of Heaven.
7.
Jesus ascended into Heaven. Jesus ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father. This happened
after Jesus was resurrected. We too will go to Heaven, but only through faith in Jesus Christ. As explained in Mark 16v19-20
(English-NIV): "After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and He sat at the right hand of God.
Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed His word by the signs that
accompanied it."
8. Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead. Jesus will return again to judge the living
and the dead, and to establish a kingdom that will have no end. In Matthew 24v30-31 (English-NIV), Jesus is quoted as saying
that He will return during the last days of man: "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all
the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.
And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of
the heavens to the other."
9. People who repent of their sins will be forgiven. People are "saved" and forgiven
if they confess their sins and confess their belief in the resurrection of Jesus. As explained in Romans 10v9-10 (English-NIV),
"That if you confess with your mouth, `Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will
be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are
saved."
10. Anyone can have salvation. All people may receive salvation in the name of Jesus Christ. In Romans 10v12
(English-NIV), for example, it says: "For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile - the same Lord is Lord of all and
richly blesses all who call on Him…"
John 3:16 (NIV): "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and
only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
